Le ministre des Affaires étrangères russe, Sergueï Lavrov, a ainsi mis l’accent sur le risque nucléaire inhérent à un conflit de grande ampleur dans un entretien à Al Jazeera. Le ministre a ajouté que Washington connaissait pertinemment les risques d’une telle escalade.
« Une Troisième Guerre mondiale serait nucléaire et dévastatrice », a expliqué le chef de la diplomatie russe à la chaîne qatarie.
Dans ce contexte, Sergueï Lavrov a ajouté que Moscou ne permettrait pas à l’Ukraine de se doter de l’arme nucléaire, pouvant menacer le peuple russe. Moscou s’était déjà inquiété fin février des positions de Kiev qui avait déclaré vouloir accéder au statut de puissance nucléaire.
Des propos pris au sérieux par les autorités russes au regard du passé de l’Ukraine, qui a hérité de certaines technologies nucléaires soviétiques. Fin février, Vladimir Poutine avait ainsi déclaré que la menace de Kiev de se doter de bombes nucléaires n’était pas une « bravade vide ».
Surpris par certaines sanctions
Sergueï Lavrov a par ailleurs réaffirmé que la Russie n’était pas isolée sur la scène internationale, malgré les événements. Un langage déjà tenu par le Kremlin qui a insisté ce 28 février sur son partenariat avec la Chine.
Le ministre a néanmoins admis qu’il ne s’attendait pas à ce que les sanctions antirusses s’étendent jusqu’aux sphères culturelles et sportives.
« Nous étions prêts pour ces sanctions, mais nous ne nous attendions pas à ce qu’elles ciblent des athlètes, des intellectuels, des artistes et des gens des médias », confie Sergueï Lavrov à Al Jazeera.
Côté sport, l’équipe nationale de football russe a notamment été bannie de la prochaine Coupe du monde, alors qu’elle était encore à la lutte pour une qualification. Une mesure qualifiée de « discriminatoire » par la Fédération nationale de football russe.
Le club de foot du Spartak Moscou a également été exclu de la Ligue Europa, dont il devait jouer les huitièmes de finales face à Leipzig. Les équipes nationales russes ont aussi été déclarées indésirables dans les compétitions internationales de rugby, de tennis ou encore de hockey sur glace.
Les sportifs russes ne pourront pas non plus participer aux compétitions d’athlétisme en 2022, même sous bannière neutre, a décidé la Fédération internationale d’athlétisme.
Enfin, le monde de la culture a également été touché. Plusieurs chefs d’orchestre russes ont vu leurs concerts déprogrammés par de prestigieuses institutions comme la Scala de Milan ou le Carnegie Hall.
