C’est parti pour un mois de ferveur, de communion. La Coupe d’Afrique des Nations (CAN) a démarré. Les drapeaux sont hissés, il n’est plus question de faim, famine ou chômage, tous sont rassasiés. Paul Barthélemy Biya’a peut parader. Quand il arrivait au pouvoir, aucun des joueurs camerounais n’avait vu le jour. Mais pour avoir construit plus de stades que d’universités, il est acclamé par des foules en liesses, heureuses de l’apercevoir niché dans une limousine, les deux bras vers le ciel qui l’a élu.
Paul Barthélemy Biya’a a donné le coup d’envoi de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations (CAN) qui démarre ce dimanche 9 janvier 2022 dans son pays. A 88 ans, le plus âgé des chefs d’Etat africains s’est présenté dans un stade d’Olembé flambant neuf à bord d’une limousine pour assister à un match d’ouverture dont aucun des joueurs n’avait vu le jour en novembre 1982 quand il prenait le pouvoir. Si Paul Biya se donne autant de mal, c’est parce qu’il a très tôt compris que le football pouvait être l’opium perpétuant son règne.
En effet, en 1984, alors que le Cameroun célébrait ses « Lions indomptables » qui venaient de remporter la CAN, le président Biya, qui succédait deux ans plus tôt à Ahmadou Ahidjo, fît cas d’une tentative de coup d’Etat pour évincer l’essentiel de ses opposants. Alors que ses compatriotes n’avaient d’yeux et d’oreilles que pour le ballon rond, Paul Biya neutralisait toutes les figures susceptibles ou désignées comme tel de compliquer sa gouvernance. Une chasse aux sorcières qui ne s’était pas limitée aux membres de la Garde présidentielle accusés d’avoir perpétré le putsch manqué. Même son prédécesseur, qui avait démissionné pour lui permettre d’accéder au pouvoir, fut accusé d’être parmi les commanditaires du coup d’Etat manqué, jugé et condamné. Les appels à manifester étaient noyés par les cris d’allégresse célébrant les footballeurs qui venaient de décrocher, en terre ivoirienne, la première coupe d’Afrique de leur histoire.
Quarante ans plus tard, le Cameroun n’a pas changé, Paul Biya non plus. De Joseph Antoine Bell à Samuel Eto’o Fils en passant par Roger Mila, pendant que les « Lions indomptables » dominaient le continent en remportant cinq CAN (1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 et 2017), Paul Biya torpillait la démocratie, détournait l’économie dont les groupes français sont les principaux bénéficiaires et faisait miroiter aux jeunes un avenir passant par un terrain de football.
Quand en 2017, à l’approche de la présidentielle de 2018, il se susurrait que Paul Biya allait passer la main et quitter le pouvoir, c’est l’organisation de la CAN, qui devait se tenir en 2019 au Cameroun, qui a servi de prétexte pour avaliser un septième mandat du Président. La suite est connue. Non seulement Biya s’est présenté mais s’est déclaré réélu avec 71,3% des voix, selon les résultats officiels. Son principal opposant, Maurice Kamto, arrivé deuxième à l’élection présidentielle, s’est retrouvé en prison pour avoir contesté les résultats.
«La vraie pandémie, c’est Paul Pillard / 38 ans de dictature, c’est fini / On ne peut plus parler, on ne peut plus crier / Il nous reste qu’une chose à faire… », clame dans un single le bassiste d’origine camerounaise Richard Bona. Pour le cinéaste Jean-Pierre Bekolo, «au Cameroun, la réalité dépasse souvent la fiction ». Les acteurs politiques persécutés s’ils ne sont pas du côté du pouvoir, les artistes ont pris le flambeau de la contestation sans ébranler Paul Biya qui s’est fait encore acclamer ce dimanche par des Camerounais heureux d’accueillir la CAN.
Seulement, Paul Biya n’est pas le seul président africain à s’appuyer sur le sport pour enfumer les jeunes pour qui il n’y a aucune perspective à proposer. Macky SALL qui a déjà mis en service Dakar arèna est sur les pas du président camerounais. En effet, alors que les universités Amadou Mahtar MBOW et du Sine Saloum El Hadji Ibrahima NIASS (USSEIN) sont en chantier depuis plus de cinq ans, il a annoncé l’ouverture en février 2022 du stade Olympique de Diamniadio dont la première pierre a été posée en février 2020. Ainsi, quand il s’agit de jeu et d’amusement, les chantiers ne traînent pas. Le jeune qui s’amuse en commentant les performances de sa star n’a pas le temps de contester son Président.
