La bataille d’Uhud a été rude pour les Musulmans. Ils avaient essuyé d’énormes pertes même si la victoire ne pouvait être attribuée aux Quraysh. La tournure de la bataille avait plus qu’intrigué les Musulmans qui étaient tout heureux de regagner leurs maisons en vie. Le Tout-Puissant leur avait donné un retentissant avertissement. Ils avaient remporté une bataille en étant largement inférieurs en nombre et en équipement. Cette victoire ne devait pas les inciter à dormir sur leurs lauriers. Ils ne devaient pas penser qu’il suffisait d’être présent sur un champ de bataille pour remporter la victoire. Pour un enseignement tellement important, il fallait une véritable mise à l’épreuve comme Uhud.
Les années passèrent. Les blessures eurent le temps de cicatriser. Une nuit, le Prophète Mouhamed (PSL) fit un songe. Il rêva de se rendre à la Ka’ba avec ses compagnons dans le cadre d’un pèlerinage. Le songe renseignait d’un voyage qui se déroulait dans les meilleures conditions. Aucun n’obstacle majeur ne s’était dressé sur le passage aux lieux saints. C’est en paix et avec amour qu’ils arrivèrent à Le Mecque. Content d’avoir fait un tel rêve, le Messager en parla à ses compagnons qui étaient tout aussi heureux que lui. Ils le savaient, les rêves du Prophète (PSL) annonçaient irrémédiablement la suite. La nouvelle était d’autant plus agréable que la Ka’ba était pour les musulmans plus qu’un lieu de culte. Ils voulaient tous y aller à force d’écouter les sermons du Prophète (PSL). Le rêve de ce dernier fut donc interprété comme un appel auquel il fallait répondre. C’est donc sans surprise que quand le Prophète (PSL) annonça à ses compagnons et à certaines tribus arabes des environs de Médine qu’il avait l’intention de se rendre à La Mecque, ils furent nombreux à vouloir l’accompagner. 
Après les deux batailles qui les ont opposés aux musulmans, les Quraysh furent très surpris en apprenant que le Prophète (PSL) s’apprêtait à venir à la Ka’ba, à La Mecque. Certains trouvèrent que les musulmans qui ne les avaient même pas informés de leur visite, n’avaient aucun respect à leur égard. Eux qui constituaient la tribu la plus importante et la plus puissante d’Arabie. Eux qui étaient les gardiens de la Ka’ba. Ils proposèrent un refus catégorique de les admettre dans la cité. D’autres suggèrent une attaque préventive. Il ne fallait même pas les laisser s’approcher de La Mecque.
Le Prophète (PSL) était informé des intentions des Quraysh. Très perspicace, il avait des hommes qui l’informaient de ce qui se tramait chez ses ennemis traditionnels. Et, en fonction des renseignements qui leur parvenaient, les Musulmans choisissaient le chemin à prendre. Ils ne s’étaient pas déplacés pour faire la guerre et étaient décidés, malgré leur grand nombre, à tout faire afin d’éviter le conflit. D’ailleurs, comme Mouhamed (PSL) le leur avait recommandé, ils avaient tous laissé leurs armes à Médine. Ils étaient informés que Khalid ibn al-Walid, celui qui avait fait tourner la bataille d’Uhud à la faveur des Mecquois, était à la tête de centaines de cavaliers et faisait route en direction des pèlerins, décidé à les intercepter. Arrivés à une vaste plaine du nom de Hudaybiya, au sud de La Mecque, les musulmans décidèrent d’y camper.
Quand les Quraysh apprirent que les musulmans avaient échappé à leurs patrouilles et qu’ils étaient à moins d’une journée de marche de La Mecque, ils décidèrent de leur envoyer un émissaire. Au fond, comme les Musulmans, les Mecquois n’étaient pas réellement prêts à en découdre. Le voyage pour le moins improvisé du Messager les avait pris au dépourvu. C’est pourquoi ils voulurent le contraindre à rebrousser chemin sans avoir à combattre. Réussir à détourner Mouhamed (PSL) de son chemin pouvait être l’équivalent d’une bataille remportée. Cela pouvait saper son autorité et flétrir sa réputation dans cette grande Arabie qui lui prêtait de plus en plus attention. Lui empêcher de fouler le sol de La Mecque pouvait davantage redorer leur blason. Ainsi, le messager qu’ils envoyèrent aux Musulmans se voulut intransigeant. Il rapporta que les notables Quraysh ne souhaitaient pas la bienvenue aux voyageurs et qu’ils leur demandaient de faire demi-tour.
Une injonction inacceptable qui mit de nombreux compagnons du prophète en colère. La troisième bataille entre Mecquois et Médinois était-elle sur le point d’éclater ?
