De nombreux musulmans, notamment de très proches du Prophète (PSL), n’avaient pas compris pourquoi Mouhamed (PSL) avait obtempéré face aux injonctions des Quraysh et accepté de faire demi-tour. Le protocole que le Messager avait signé était, à leurs yeux, déséquilibrés. Mais, au moment de fouler le sol de la Mecque l’année qui a suivi, beaucoup comprirent le sens de la démarche de Mouhamed (PSL). Non seulement, ils avaient retrouvé, pour nombreux d’entre eux, leur Mecque natale, mais ce Pèlerinage inaugural, qui avait mobilisé des milliers d’individus, avait fait le tour de l’Arabie et avait considérablement participé à rehausser l’image de l’Islam. Et ce n’était pas tout.
Comme nous l’avons mentionné dans le chapitre précédent, Mouhamed (PSL) avait grandement mis à profit ce temps de paix que le pacte qu’il avait signé avait rendu possible. Pendant que les Quraysh se recroquevillaient dans leur Mecque, lui voyait le monde. En plus d’avoir dissuadé les ennemis de l’Islam, de l’autre côté de la frontière, avec, notamment, les expéditions menées à Khaybar et Tayma, le Prophète (PSL) en avait profité pour étendre les tentacules de la diplomatie. Ainsi, dans toutes les grandes capitales, de celle de la Perse, à celle de Byzance, en passant par Abyssinie et le Caire, il envoya des émissaires, passer le salut du Messager de Dieu et inviter leurs souverains à embrasser l’Islam. L’empereur byzantin Héraclius reçut sa lettre. Lui, qui avait mis en déroute les puissants Perses et rapporter la grande croix à Jérusalem, recevait une correspondance l’invitant à changer de religion. Loin de se mettre en colère, Héraclius philosopha.
Le Prophète Mouhamed (PSL) n’eut pas tout le temps qu’il voulait pour dérouler sa stratégie. Le pacte qu’il avait passé avec les Quraysh ne tint que quelques années. En effet, un incident qui ne mettait même pas aux prises Mecquois et Médinois avait mis le feu aux poudres.
Dans l’accord de paix de Hudaybiya, il était indiqué que toute tribu avait le droit de se ranger derrière un deux camps, sans risquer des représailles. Ainsi, deux tribus qui étaient particulièrement hostiles avaient noué des alliances qui étaient loin d’annihiler leur animosité. Les Bakr cheminaient avec les Quraysh, tandis que les Khuzaha avaient rejoint les musulmans. Mais, pour avoir fait de tels choix, ces deux tribus étaient contraintes par l’accord qui les obligeait à observer la paix. Seulement, parmi les Bakr, il y avait un clan qui nourrissait une haine viscérale envers les Khuzaha. Les membres dudit clan, sous l’influence d’un chef rancunier, décidèrent de saisir cette occasion de paix pour régler ce vieux compte. Ils mobilisèrent de nombreux hommes et d’importants moyens et attaquèrent, par surprise, les Khuzaha. Les combats se prolongèrent jusqu’à la Mecque où avec l’aide des Quraysh, les Bakr donnèrent le coup de grâce aux Khuzaha. L’accord qui maintenant la paix fut ainsi violé. Mis en déroute, les Khuzaha, qui avaient essuyé de nombreuses pertes en vies humaines, envoyèrent un émissaire à Mouhamed (PSL) pour lui expliquer ce qui s’était passé. Pour le Messager, il ne faisait aucun doute que les Quraysh avaient violé l’accord et que cela ne pouvait être sans conséquence.
Le Prophète n’était pas le seul à penser que cette attaque ne pouvait rester impunie. Du côté des Quraysh, on ne mit pas de temps pour comprendre la grande erreur qui venait d’être commise. Non seulement, leurs partisans avaient attaqué ceux de Mouhamed (PSL), mais eux-mêmes avaient participé à l’agression. Ils se rendirent compte que de par leur geste, l’accord de paix ne tenait plus et qu’une éventuelle campagne de représailles des musulmans n’était absolument pas à écarter. Ils décidèrent de prendre les devants et d’envoyer un émissaire à Mouhamed (PSL). Et c’est donc Abu Soufiann, un des plus respectables notables des Quraysh, qui fut désigné pour aller rencontrer le Prophète (PSL) à Médine. Une tâche ardue pour celui qui avait conduit les troupes de la Mecque à la bataille de Uhud. Conscient de la délicatesse de sa mission qui consistait à amadouer les musulmans mécontents, Abu Soufiann arriva à Médine et fila directement chez sa fille Um Habiba. Arrivé chez celle-ci, il fit abstraction de tout ce qui s’était passé et voulut s’installer sur une paillasse. Sa fille l’en dissuada en s’interposant. Surpris, Abu Soufiann demanda : « qu’est-ce qui se passe ma fille ? Ne suis-je pas la bienvenue chez toi ? ». La réponse de sa fille ne tarda pas : « C’est le lit du Messager de Dieu et en tant qu’idolâtre, tu es impur. C’est pourquoi je ne veux pas que tu t’assoies sur le lit du Messager de Dieu».
Abu Soufiann quitta sa fille, les dents serrées, et se rendit chez le Prophète (PSL) qui ne manquait rien de ses mouvements. «Mouhamed (PSL), je suis venu te demander de confirmer notre accord de paix et d’en valider la prolongation», lui dit-il. Et au Prophète (PSL) de lui demander : « Est-ce pour cela que tu es venu ici ? N’as-tu fait aucun mal ? » Abu Soufiann fit de nouveau abstraction de ce qui s’était passé et dit : « Nous respectons notre accord de paix de Hudaybiya. Nous en observons strictement les termes». A ces mots, Mouhamed (PSL) mit un terme à l’échange.
